It's hard to believe that simply taking a photo of a menu board could have such an impact, but this photo seems to resonate with everyone. Non-golfers usually assume that this sign is from the 60's instead of 2005 because of the prices, not realizing that Augusta National has made it a point to keep the prices low. You could go all day at The Masters with nothing but a badge and a twenty dollar bill and be just fine, although you might want to take a credit card as well if you are going to hit the merchandise pavilion (and getting the badge in the first place is no easy task). Masters patrons love this photo because it reminds them of those great pimento cheese, egg salad and barbecue sandwiches. I like to start with pimento cheese for breakfast, then barbecue for lunch, then another pimento cheese in the afternoon. The Masters moon pie was a brilliant addition to the menu in 2008.

I was shocked, absolutely shocked, that last year they changed the look of the menu, adding slick modern graphics that lost the understated charm of the above version. But that only further qualifies the importance of documentation, as this is just another example of a photo I have taken that has been given new relevance as an historical marker because something has been altered, removed or destroyed.

I personally like this photo because it is a testament that art does not always have to be complicated, such as Andy Warhol's Soup Cans and Brillo boxes. Art can be simple, but for it to be vital, it also needs to allow layers of meaning and complexity to be unraveled. I have always considered this photo be in the category of pop-art.

To be timely, I will start things off with some images from The Masters.

Leaders is one my early favorites, and above all else composition is the key ingredient here. I think this photo captures the importance of fonts in signage, and that the visual integrity of a leaderboard can add a lot to a golf tournament, certainly in person and even on TV. The digital scoreboards at regular tour events just do not resonate and add little to the experience. There is wonderful drama and a nostalgic quality to watching the scores and names being manually flipped. This leaderboard looks important, even before a single name goes up.

I especially like this photo now because it makes me think of my good friend and "Leader" Deke Copenhaver, who is now the Mayor of Augusta. His leadership in Augusta has earned him great popularity, and his example of political diplomacy and city pride is impressive. Also, you have to love a mayor who lists The Replacements and Echo & The Bunnymen among his favorites on his Facebook page. He also looks cool on a t-shirt! If you're in Augusta on Monday, you should attend The Mayor's Masters Reception honoring Fuzzy Zoeller.

Finally, I like the fact that this leaderboard is blank, and we all wait in wonder to find out what name will sit alone at the top in 10 days' time.

I'll be back tomorrow to discuss another photo of the day. Feel free to leave a comment...and to tell a friend.
